Is the Hohner Old Standby Any Good?
The Hohner Old Standby is an inexpensive diatonic harmonica, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a good buy. All Hohner harmonicas used to be made in Germany, but some are now outsourced to China. Newer Old Standby models are made in China. They still look the same, featuring stainless steel covers and brass reeds, but the quality has definitely diminished. The reeds in the newer Old Standby models tend to go flat quickly. In fact, some arrive with flat reeds. This harmonica is a good cheap choice for kids that want to practice, but anyone who really wants to learn should probably invest a little more money on a more reliable model.
