Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton (born in Alabama, December 11, 1926 – July 25, 1984) is considered one of the greatest female blues players on harmonica. She shared the stage with other harmonica greats like John Lee Hooker. She frequently used the harmonica in her stage shows and was well respected by the male-dominated blues legends. Her career was one of “almost made it” … but her songs are listed among those that define rock and roll.
