DeFord Bailey (born in Tennessee, December 14, 1899 – July 2, 1982): A grandson of slaves, Bailey learned harmonica at the age of three, when he was bedridden due to polio. He was a pioneer member of the WSM Grand Ole Opry (1927 to 1941). He performed with many major country stars, including Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe. He was fired from the show because of performance rights issues and spent the last years of his life shining shoes.
